“I believe the point is: if you can eat shrimp, we can eat cock.”

things people overlook when reading the Bible every single day:

  • we are free of the old covenant - the ceremonial and civil laws of the old testament - because Jesus died.

If you don’t believe me, here’s Ephesians 2:14-15a:

14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility,15 by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. …

…Romans 10:4:

Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

…and Galatians 3:23-25:

23 Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed. 24 So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. 25 Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.

Mmm, close. Counter time.

Yes, we are free from the Old Covenant and are no longer binded. So we both agree that not everything in the Bible applies. The Bible isnt the ultimate moral code on everything? You know that Jesus still supported slavery, right? And I’d hope that you and i agree that slavery’s wrong. So there are exceptions to the New and Old testaments? So… As long as we’re cherry picking the Bible, let’s go ahead and toss out the 10 commandments and the creation story while we’re at it.

Leviticus 18:22. No gay sex. So… All those other rules in Leviticus dont apply anymore. But being gay still applies?

The Ten Commandments were, in effect, summarized by Jesus in Luke 10:26-27:

26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”

27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

The first half of the commandments are loving the Lord your God and the second half is loving your neighbor as yourself.

Slavery is a completely different story. I don’t recall Jesus ever directly supporting slavery(cite that if you will), unless you’re just talking about the Word in general. We see slavery as wrong because we’re human, just as we see rape and murder as worse sins than theft, gossip or lying. God doesn’t rank sins like we do, and He doesn’t see slavery like we do. Unfortunately, I don’t know much more about what the Bible has on slavery.

The homosexuality issue is covered by Paul in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10:

Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Now, “the creation story” is not exactly a set of laws or part of a covenant, so there’s no reason for it to be involved.

God doesn’t rank sins, but if you’re catholic and believe in the Charism of Infallibility , then that’s a different story but oh well. God doesn’t rank sins… So sinning is black and white. Gossip is just as bad as murder to him then. So we weren’t made in God’s image. You can’t really say that we judge severity of sins due to the fall, since it’s probably better that we do.  If we know the severity of things where God does not, it means one, or several, of the following.
1.  We know more about morality than God.
2.  We don’t need God for morality.
3.  Morality comes from within us, not the Bible.

As for what Paul said, that’s very likely a mistranslation. “malakos” can mean either soft or cowardly. “arsenokoites” was a term used for when people forcefully had anal sex to show dominance due to insecurities. What term matches best with that? Cowardly, in many scholars opinion. Early translations said soft, which led people to assume homosexual. However,  nobody (that I know of, you can find evidence to the contrary) has yet to prove it ever actually meant homosexual.

Slavery in the NT:

47 “And a servant who knows what the master wants, but isn’t prepared and doesn’t carry out those instructions, will be severely punished. 48 But someone who does not know, and then does something wrong, will be punished only lightly. When someone has been given much, much will be required in return; and when someone has been entrusted with much, even more will be required. Luke 12:47-48

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. -Ephesians 6:5

All slaves should show full respect for their masters so they will not bring shame on the name of God and his teaching. If the masters are believers, that is no excuse for being disrespectful. Those slaves should work all the harder because their efforts are helping other believers[a] who are well loved. -1 Timothy 6:1-2
